Since 2008 more than 60 writers, intellectuals and artists have been arrested or detained as part of a wide crackdown by China against the cultural resurgence seen across Tibet.

Tashi Rabten

Summary: A young writer and editor of a banned literary magazine. He was detained in April 2010 in connection to his writings and sentenced after more than a year, during which time his whereabouts and well-being were unknown.

Kelsang Tsultrim

Summary: Tibetan monk and writer who recorded a video about the situation in Tibet. First arrested in July 2010 and later released. Re-arrested in December 2010 and sentenced in December 2011.

Kunga Tseyang

Summary: A Tibetan monk and leading writer, intellectual, photographer and environmentalist activist. Detained in March 2009, his arrest is thought to be linked to his writings, which include the essay “Who Are the Real Splittists’.

Dolma Kyab

Summary: A writer and history teacher arrested in 2005 at the middle school where he was employed. In a letter smuggled from prison he stated that his arrested was linked to his unpublished book “The Restless Himalayas”.
