Former political prisoner Tashi Phuntsok, 60, has died in Lithang (in Chinese, Litang) county, a Tibetan region in Sichuan province, where the monk had staged protests against deforestation by China and suffered beatings in jail, an exile source told RFA.

10 Tibetans arrested in connection to coronavirus rumours

10 Tibetans have been arrested in Lhasa in central Tibet, according to Radio Free Asia.

The 10 Tibetans were reportedly arrested on 12 March for breaching control measures imposed across the so-called Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) to combat the spread of COVID-19.

Three Tibetans detained for five to ten days and fined 500 yuan for spreading coronavirus “rumours.”

The Tibetans have been forced to do Chinese legal education training and authorities closed the online WeChat groups they were using on 20 February 2020.

Torture in Tibet

Torture and ill-treatment is widespread in Tibet.

Tibetan political prisoners are subjected to torture and maltreatment, to break their spirit and in order to obtain confessions that form the basis for convictions to long-term prison sentences.

Common torture practices include:

  • Electric-shock batons to the head, face, mouth or even genitals
  • Beating with sticks and iron rods
  • Forced sitting/standing in extreme positions for hours
  • Application of hot objects to the skin
  • Mental torture and humiliation
  • Deprivation of sleep and food
  • Solitary confinement without daylight

Many kinds of cruel torture methods are used which can leave prisoners mentally and physically scarred.
